The short version.
- What: Project Widsith is designing the Nautilus, a family of underwater drones to take plastic out of harbors, river mouths and, later, the open ocean, while letting sea life go.
- Where it stands: Design stage: building the team for the Phase One prototype. Nothing has been built yet.
- Who: founded by Craig Baker, a physicist and mathematician (Trinity College Dublin) with a master's in computer science (University of Colorado), who wrote ocean-radar software at NOAA's Wave Propagation Laboratory in Boulder before founding CDB Systems.
- Why it's different: sonar gates and a slow intake for sea life, sealed bales instead of trips home to empty, ghost-net mapping, and ocean data on every mile.
